I have always loved the honesty of that quote. It always makes me smile. Here is humanity grumbling and moaning, their focus on their own personal needs (like most of us) and not on the wonderful events of the Exodus.

The snake on the pole has elements of pre-jewish religion, thanks for link to 2 Kings 18:4.
They were focused on what they wanted and grumbling about what God had provided. Yes, I am convicted by that. It is not unusual that when God does bless with material things far above our basic needs - we then are tempted to focus on those things to the point of idolatry.
